True Breakthroughs in Medicines
ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM (LIPITOR)
The newest HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to be approved. This medicine is now the most potent drug in lowering LDL cholesterol. The added benefit that atorvastatin offers is that it also lowers triglyceride levels as well!
HMG-COA REDUCTASE INHIBITORS
Two medicines from this class have now been approved for PREVENTION of strokes. This means that in addition to preventing heart attacks, these medicines can also help prevent a widely suffered problem.
INFLIXIMAB (AVAKINE)
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is implicated in numerous conditions. Centocor received FDA approval for use of infliximab in treating Chron's disease. Since TNF is also involved in some aspects of arthritis and AIDS, it appears that this newly approved medicine will have broader applications than its original approval.
LYME DISEASE VACCINE
This is the first vaccine to be FDA approved to PREVENT Lyme disease. The Smith Kline Beecham product (LYMErix) is the first of two vaccines that are pending approval.
PROTEASE INHIBITORS
I include this class (see Protease Inhibitors) again this year because more than any other medicines in the history of the AIDS epidemic, the protease inhibitors have offered the prospect (as combination therapy with other HIV medicines) of making HIV infection a long-term, survivable disease.
REPAGLINIDE (PKANDIN)
Meglitinides are a new class of medicines to fight diabetes. This drug is the first to be FDA approved, and offers a new chemical entity.
SLIDENAFIL (VIAGRA)
This drug has sparked more interest than any other medicine since the FDA started approving medicines. Presently, it offers hope to many men who have faced injections or implants in the past. The full story on interactions with other medicines is still unfolding. I've included a broad group of possible interacting medicines for you in the new profile.
