How to Use This Site
Tell your doctor if you suspect you may be having an adverse drug effect. Serious adverse reactions may start with mild, unthreatening symptoms. It's also possible to have an adverse reaction that has not yet been reported. Don't discount an adverse effect just because it's not listed. A properly selected drug usually has a comparatively small chance of producing serious harm. Knowing that a drug can cause a serious adverse reaction should not deter you from using it when it has been properly selected and its use will be carefully supervised.
Possible Effects on Sexual Function
This information is often NOT something people want to discuss, or something that patients are told about. Currently available information (often inadequate and vague) from all reliable sources is presented. Both physician and patient are well advised to discuss frankly any potential effect that drug therapy could have on sexual expression.
Adverse Effects That May Appear Similar to Natural Diseases or Disorders
Medicines can actually cause effects similar to widely diagnosed diseases or disorders. Quite often this inadvertent error is compounded by prescribing another drug to relieve the "symptoms" of the first. My father was prescribed a medicine for his "arthritis" when he was actually having an adverse effect from a medicine for his heart rhythm. For milder symptoms (e.g., nasal congestion or diarrhea from reserpine), the oversight may not be too serious. But in the case of the Parkinson-like effects of some drugs, the mistake can be devastating. This section tells you about this common flaw.
Natural Diseases or Disorders That May Be Activated by This Drug
Many drugs can "activate" latent disorders that may not be recognized as drug induced. If a new and seemingly unrelated disorder starts during treatment with any new medicine, ask your doctor if it may be drug related.
Possible Effects on Laboratory Tests
Most drugs have significant effects on body chemistry and organ systems. Some effects are intended and beneficial (therapeutic); others are unintended, unavoidable, and potentially harmful. Timely use of laboratory tests lets us check how well a drug is working and the course of the condition being treated.
