It is important for patients to take Generic Ultram-Tramadol specifically as directed. To avoid dependency, do not take more than the recommended dosage. Although this medication can be taken without food, patients should take the medication with a glass of water or milk. Even though the average dosage is 100 - 400 mg per day, with an oral tablet taken every 4 to 6 hours, persons with kidney or liver problems may require a lower dosage. Elderly patients may also need a low dosage. In fact, persons over the age of 75 should not be prescribed a dosage higher than 300 mg per day. Furthermore, persons who are sensitive to medications may begin with a low dosage. If necessary, physicians can adjust the medication as needed.
Do not crush the Generic Ultram-Tramadol tablet. This medicine is for oral (by mouth) use only. Powder from a crushed tablet should not be inhaled or diluted with liquid and injected into the body. Using this medicine by inhalation or injection can cause life-threatening side effects, overdose, or death. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). You should not take Generic Ultram-Tramadol if:
• If you have an allergy to opioids, Generic Ultram-Tramadol, or any other part of the medicine.
• If you have ever been dependent on narcotics.
• If you are drunk or drinking a lot.
• If you are taking any of these medicines: Sleeping pills, pain medicines, narcotics, or medicines for mental problems..

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicine. Make sure to tell about the allergy and how it affected you. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat; or any other symptoms involved.

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it's time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take only that dose. Don't take double doses.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. A Generic Ultram-Tramadol overdose can be fatal. Symptoms of a Generic Ultram-Tramadol overdose may include drowsiness, shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, extreme weakness, cold or clammy skin, feeling light-headed, fainting, or coma.

Similar to other prescription medications, Generic Ultram-Tramadol may cause serious side effects. Seizures are rare, but may occur. For this matter, persons who have a medical history of epilepsy should not take this particular drug. Other serious side effects include difficult breathing, swelling (lips, tongues, closing of throat), and hives. Furthermore, patients may experience mild withdrawal symptoms. Less serious side effects may include dizziness, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, and headache.

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially of:
• carbamazepine
• narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine)
• drugs used to aid sleep
• antidepressants (e.g., SSRI-types such as fluoxetine or fluvoxamine)
• MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine)
• psychiatric medicine (e.g., nefazodone)
• "triptan"-type drugs
• anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam)
• sibutramine

Also, report use of certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine) which are also present in many cough-and-cold products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
