Generic Lotensin is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor. It controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels.
Note: It is not a cure.
ACE is an enzyme that participate in the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes constriction of arteries in the body, thereby elevating blood pressure. Generic Lotensin - Benazepril lowers blood pressure by inhibiting the formation of angiotensin II, thus relaxing the arteries. Apart of the fact that relaxing the arteries lowers blood pressure, it also improves the pumping efficiency of a failing heart and improves cardiac output in patients with heart failure.
Active Ingredients: Benazepril hydrochloride.
Inactive Ingredients: hydrogenated castor oil (5-mg, 10-mg, and 20-mg tablets), magnesium stearate (40-mg tablets),, propylene glycol (5-mg and 40-mg tablets), microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, crospovidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, polysorbate 80, lactose, iron oxides, titanium dioxide, starch and talc.

Generic Lotensin is prescribed for treating high blood pressure. Usually it is enough to take only this medicine, but sometimes it is also used with a diuretic medication in order to enhance the blood pressure lowering effect.

Taking this medication follow the exact instructions provided by your health care. Avoid taking the medication in larger amounts. Do not take it for longer than recommended by your health care. In order to get better results your doctor may change your dose. Each dose should be washed down with a full glass of water. It doesn't make difference if you take Generic Lotensin with or without food. Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. That's why it is recommended to drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily while you are taking this medication.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Store at room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F).
Protect from moisture.
Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

If you ever had an allergic reaction to any of the following: Lotensin, sulfa or other sulfonamide-derived drugs such as Bactrim and Septra, ACE inhibitors such as Captopril and Vasotec, thiazide diuretics such as HydroDIURIL and Esidrix you should avoid taking this medication.
If you have a history of asthma or allergies, you should inform about this your doctor, as you may be at greater risk for an allergic reaction to this medication.
If you have difficulties or are unable to urinate, don't take this medication.

Using Generic Lotensin by pregnant women cause injury or even death to the unborn child. You should discontinue taking this medicine if a pregnancy is detected. The diuretic component of Lotensin can cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) and abnormal bruising and bleeding in newborns.
Generic Lotensin appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. To avoid potential harm to the baby, you'll need to choose between continuing your treatment with Generic Lotensin and breastfeeding.

Take the missed dose when you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.
Note: Do not take extra dose to make up the missed dose.

Symptoms of an overdose may include feeling extremely light-headed or dizzy, or fainting. Call your local emergency immediately if an overdose is suspected.

You should inform your doctor immediately if you experience at least one of the following side effects:
• dizziness;
• lightheadedness or fainting spells;
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth;
• swelling of your face or tongue;
• swelling of your legs or ankles; uneven or fast heart beat;
• difficulty breathing, or swallowing;
• decreased amount of urine passed;
• skin rash, itching;

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention: headache; cough; tiredness; nausea.

Generic Lotensin is contraindicated to people that have allergy to ACE inhibitors. Worsening of kidney function has been observed with ACE inhibitors, especially in patients with severe heart failure or pre-existing kidney disease.
Uniting Generic Lotensin with potassium containing salt substitutes, potassium supplements, and potassium conserving diuretics such as spironolactone (Aldactone), amiloride (Moduretic), and triamterene (Dyazide, Maxzide), can lead to dangerously high blood levels of potassium.
Indomethacin (Indocin) and possibly other anti-inflammatory medications may decrease the blood pressure lowering effect of Generic Lotensin.
In rare instances, low white blood cell counts have been reported with the use of another ACE inhibitor. Low white blood cells increase the patient's risk of infections. When taken with lithium, Generic Lotensin (Benazapril) can increase lithium to toxic levels in the blood. Safe use in children is not established. It is not habit forming.

Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Generic Lotensin.
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.
Generic Lotensin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities and notify your doctor. Also use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position.
