Generic Fosamax - Alendronate belongs to a class of medications used to strengthen bones. Generic Fosamax is a bisphosphonate that acts as a specific inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Bisphosphonates are synthetic analogs of pyrophosphate that bind to the hydroxyapatite found in bone.
Bone is in a constant state of remodeling, whereby old bone is removed by cells called osteoclasts, and new bone is laid down by cells called osteoblasts. Alendronate inhibits bone removal by the osteoclasts.
Active Ingredients: Alendronate sodium
Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, cellulose, anhydrous lactose and magnesium stearate.
What is Generic Fosamax - Alendronate PRESCRIBED For?
Generic Fosamax - Alendronate is used and to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, to reduce hypercalcemia in tumor-induced bone disease, and to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease.
How Should I Take Generic Fosamax - Alendronate?
Generic Fosamax - Alendronate tablets should be taken orally in the morning. Tablets should be swallowed with a full glass of plain water first thing in the morning. Do not take the tablets with any other type of liquid except plain water. Do not take with orange juice, coffee or other fluids as these may decrease the absorption of Generic Fosamax.
Before taken your tablets donít eat or drink anything. You should not eat breakfast, drink, or take any other medicines for at least 30 minutes after taking Generic Fosamax - Alendronate. Your body will absorb even more of the medicine, if you can wait for 2 hours before eating.
You should remain sitting or standing upright (do not lie down) for at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine in order to avoid irritation of your throat and esophagus.
Do not let anyone else take your medication.
Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature in a dry, dark place.
Do not store in the bathroom. Moisture can cause the drug to break down.
Throw away any Generic Fosamax - Alendronate medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Fosamax - Alendronate?
Generic Fosamax - Alendronate is contraindicated to women that are pregnant or nursing. Generic Fosamax - Alendronate is also contraindicated to patients with severe kidney disease; low levels of calcium in their blood and certain disorders of the esophagus. It is contraindicated to persons with inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes. It is not recomended to individuals who are allergic to Generic Fosamax or any of its ingredients.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If your doctor prescribed you a dose daily and you missed it, do not take the dose later in the day. Continue your normal schedule starting the next morning, before you have eaten.
NOTE: Do not take double or extra doses.
If your doctor prescribed you a dose for 35-mg or 70-mg once a week and you missed it, take the dose on the morning after you remember. Then return to taking your dose just once a week, as originally scheduled on your regular chosen day of the week. NOTE: Do not take double dose on the same day or extra doses.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
Symptoms of overdose with Generic Fosamax - Alendronate are: hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and upper gastrointestinal adverse events, such as upset stomach, heartburn, esophagitis, gastritis, or ulcer.
If an overdose is suspected call your health care professional or your local emergency room immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Fosamax - Alendronate?

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Fosamax - Alendronate?
Generic Fosamax - Alendronate it is not recommended for patients with significant kidney conditions. Low blood calcium levels should be corrected prior to use Generic Fosamax because it can lower blood calcium. Calcium supplements, antacids and medications can interfere with the absorption of Generic Fosamax - Alendronate.
Donít forget that Generic Fosamax - Alendronate should be taken with at least 6-8 ounces of water. Food, drinks, and other drugs (including vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D) should not be taken for at least 30 minutes after taking Generic Fosamax - Alendronate.
Do not let anyone else take your medication.
Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
Laboratory and/or medical tests (x-rays, height measurement, blood mineral levels) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.
